EGALITARIANISM

Thomas Jefferson once said, "We hold these truths to be self evident: That all men are created equal; that they are are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  Egalitarianism is the belief in human equality. A social philosophy that promotes for the removal of any inequality among people. This is relative in the realms of gender or social status and can be applied to the four major social institutions: Government, Family, Religion, and Education. In the short story,  "A White Woman Of Color" ,different forms of oppression are shown such as: Neglect, exclusion, discrimination, poverty and so forth. Marginalization is considered the act of being treated poorly by someone as if they are not worthy. People experiencing this feel powerless and fearful. In what way can silencing or fear rob us from essence of our human story? More often then not, you can lose a sense of who you are as a person. In the story, the narrator questioned what box to check off. Given the set of options, she checked off "other." Culture is our internal home land. The culture within her, the learned and shared ways of believing and doing as part of her behavior, was gone. "By rejecting these mores I had become not only Americanized but whiter." Oppression  affects people on an emotional and physical level too. "My color was a question, "only" of culture and if i kept my culture to myself, "I was no problem." No matter what she cannot runaway from her culture. She might as well embrace it. Today, people are put into different categorizes when it comes to race, status, occupation, gender and more.  When you do not feel valued, you feel unequal.People desire to live a high quality and positive life however, if one feel dehumanized or alienated, people are put in the position to be someone else.
